Introvert Definition

Hello, fellow introverts! In this article, we’re to explore the actual definition of an “introvert”. Perhaps some of us are wrestling with the true meaning of being an introvert. I found myself in this position when I first discovered that I’m an introvert, and to this day, I regularly check the definition.

I believe it’s important to re-visit definitions occasionally to explore the foundations of this trait, and ourselves. Just a note of caution; definitions should not be viewed as a limiting or stereotypical factor, but rather a strength to work from.

I did some definition mining, and the following definitions are the most universal with common themes.

Definition 1:

Noun. “a person who is predominantly focused on internal thoughts and feelings rather than on external things or social interaction, often characterized as being quiet or withdrawn.”

Source: Oxford Languages: Via Google.

Definition 2:

Noun. “a person who prefers calm environments, limits social engagement, or embraces a greater than average preference for solitude.”

Psychology. “a person characterized by concern primarily with their own thoughts and feelings.”

Source: http://www.dictionary.com.

Definition 3:

Noun. “a shy, quiet person who is focused on their own thoughts and feelings.”

Source: Oxford Paperback Dictionary and Thesaurus-Third Edition.

As we can see from the above definitions, the common themes are quiet, inner focus on thoughts, internal focus on feelings, and preference for solitude (and supporting environments). These are very powerful fundamental themes (or values) that come with being an introvert. They are also very effective in supporting mindfulness, and meditation practices.

When we know how to color within the lines (the definitions), that’s when we can get a little adventurous and start exploring our extroverted side.

In future articles, I will explore how we can leverage some of the common themes.
